Thanks from Trees NC on Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday 2014
/Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday is an important day for Trees NC.
Ten years ago, when our organization was just starting out, co-founder Tim Womick suggested that we purchase a historic Martin Luther King Jr. Sycamore sapling from the American Forests historic tree nursery -- to be planted on the grounds of the Central Boys and Girls Club in Asheboro.
The little tree arrived complete with a certificate of authenticity -- it had been grown from a tree in Alabama on the grounds of a church where Martin Luther King Jr. made speeches during the birth years of the civil rights movement.
Planting that tree with nearly a hundred members of the Central Boys and Girls Club - and seeing the deep and profound reaction of the kids to the framed certificate of authenticity proved to be a turning point for Trees NC.
From that day forward our organization developed a lasting relationship with the youth of the Central Boys and Girls Club - and we have worked and played together ever since..... planting trees, growing a garden, picking up litter, learning about the natural environment. And, most importantly, building relationships based upon respect, caring and good will.
This year on Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday Trees NC would like to thank the thousands of volunteers, program participants and supporters who have helped make this 10 year journey possible.
